10 year old retired show dog that huffs and puffs and can’t discover cause

Hi
I have a Collie that is 10 years old. He is a retired show dog. He huffs and puffs for a awhile and then stops. This has been going on for about a month on and off. He did the same thing about a 1 year ago and stopped.

We had him tested for Cushing’s Disease and the rest of the weird diseases but nothing showed up.

His appetite is normal. He drinks about 3 quarts of water a day and he weighs 85 pounds. We had him to the vet this spring and they wanted to do some dental work and remove a wart from his eyelid to the tune of $700.00.

They could not find out why he breathed like that.

I could use some answers of what to do when this happen.

Thank you.

    Dear Roger,

I know how concerning this symptom can be in a close friend. It sounds like you’ve had the problem thoroughly checked out by your vet with no good answers.

I can share a couple of other instances I’ve seen dogs huffing and puffing in the past and maybe your vet has already checked on these but if not, you might have them checked next time you are in.

One was with my own older dog who had a heart problem that caused her to breath heavily from time to time after exertion.

The other instance is an older dog with joint problems that would huff and puff when his joints were bothering him.

As I said, your vet may have checked on these already, but if not, there are two other places to look.

Best wishes for your dog’s health,
    Joe

I had a dog that also huffed and puffed and it was her heart.

    Good luck with your dog.

my dog does that too..not as much as yours seems to though maby once or twice when he lays down or when you stroke him, i looked it up and its just themrelaxing like when we sigh, or huff when we sit down
though your dog is a lot older than mine so may be caused by something else entirly..

  6. I have a chug, pug and Chihuahua mix, she’s 9 months and lately I noticed that she id huffing like she can’t get air in or out of her lungs. It’s heartbreaking to watch. I also noticed that she does this after she gets to excided. This is her first winter snow and she was fine in it yesterday but today we went out and I has to bring her because she started to huff a lot. could she have inhaled snow that made her start huffing?
