13yr old Golden with side effects from Prednisone and Previcox

My 13 year old Golden has been on Prednisone and Previcox alternating daily for the past 5-6 years. He’s now having a terrible time with his bowels. He’s had two episodes in the house, it’s just like water. I’ve tried several medications, but nothing seems to work? When I walk him he squats to poop, and once he starts going he gets up to walk while he continues to have poop coming out. Poor guy goes 5-10 times a day and it’s always either very lose or liquid. My vet just said to take away all food and give him nothing but rice for now and continue giving him the prescription medication to stop diarrhea twice a day. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your time.

  1. Seek out a second opinion from a vet that uses homeopathy

I took my dog to the vet on Tuesday because he had scratch his eye so the vet gave me some eye drops and previcox for him. He said to give the previcox once a day. Well when I got home I gave him a previocox and the next day I gave him another one. Thursday morning around 4:00 am he had a seizure. I then he had another one and I called my Vet and talk to him. I ask him if the previcox could have cause the seizure and he said no. My dog Buddy was very healthly. Then he had another one later that day and I called my Vet again and he said come to his office and pick up some pills for the seizure so I did and gave him a pill. Later that night he had another bad seizure and I did every thing I could for him. The next morning I called my Vet again and he said to keep a close eye on him and about an hour later my Buddy died. I feel like I paid the Vet to kill my dog and I don’t know what to do about it. I’ve have cry off and on for the last few days and it hurts to know if I hadn’t gave him the pills he would still be alive today. I never had any children so he was my baby and it’s killing me loosing him because he was a joy in my life. He will always be in my heart and I will miss him alot.

  3. Becky, I’m so sorry to hear about your Buddy. One of the things that should help you get over this is you were following professional advise. Perhaps Buddy had an underlying condition which would have caused his demise in short order even without the medication. Just feel satisfied that you acted in his best interests with love and compassion. Try to avoid beating yourself up with negative thinking. Suffering follows a negative thought like the wheels of a carriage follows the horses that draw it.

I just now on June 13 read your story as my 10 year old Schnauzer was given Previcox 1/2 tablet per day for last 2 days. I read Previcox has serious side-effects after my dog had his first seizure ever and one of those side effects of Previcox is well documented it causes seizures in a few days. So sorry for your loss. In my opinion the vet who told you Previcox didn’t is completely at fault and not you. I will be staying up all night to watch my best friend tonight

In reference to the golden.I would check with your vet, but what my vet has recommended is, alternating Albon & then Pepto Bismol. I use this for my Yorkie & boxer.

Prednisone, a corticosteroid, should not be given with Previcox, an NSAID. There should be 72 – 96 hours between their use in an animal.

I have used Previcox in my 14 yr old mixed breed for several years with no major side effects.
