7y/o Eskimo with mysterious seizures. Need help!

My American Eskimo, male, neutured, will be 7 yrs. old at the end of this month.
He has had no health issues in the past, other than Lymes (??-spelling) disease,
for which he was treated with Deoxyclycline (??-spelling).
He had 2 episodes (did not appear to be full seizures), approximately 1 month apart in May & June, 2010. He had blood work done after each occurrence.
His blood work was all negative.
I took him to the University of Pennsylvania, College of Veterinary Medicine: 7/2/2010, at which time he had an actual seizure (during the evaluation) that had to be controlled with an injection of valium. He was an inpatient for 2 days.
He had an MRI/brain, which was negative, and a spinal tap that was essentially negative.
I was advised that normal proteins levels are 25. He was 31, however, I was told that this was not abnormal for a dog that had just had a seizure.
He was started on Phenobarbitol (.5 grains twice a day: am/pm).
He started the medication on Tuesday and is very lethargic. He is normally like a
firecracker. I am afraid that the dosage is too much for him.
I am looking for someone more local to monitor his case. I reside in North Brunswick,
NJ.
The drive to Philadelphia is approx. 1.5 hours.
He is my heart, and I am looking to do what is best for him.
Your assistance is greatly appreciated.
Yvonne

I don’t know how close any of these veterinarians would be to you; however, each one of them is an excellent homeopathic veterinarian and would help you to get your American Eskimo Dog off of drugs completely using homeopathic remedies to heal the cause of the seizures.

  2. You did a great work up and that is important as a database and to rule out issues in dogs over seven w/potential seizures. I am sure that UPENN did a full Thyroid Panel but if they only checked a T4 and/or FT4 that may need to be rechecked. I would recommend to look at all the ingredients of foods and treats you feed him. Make sure he is not getting no Wheat or BHT,BHA,and/or Ethyoxyquin. These are preservatives that can cause seizures or seizure type signs. I recommend a grain free diet and an immune support supplement.

It is very normal for your dog to be lethargic and tired, wobbly and not himself. Usually after a few weeks his body will adjust and he will be normal again. The good news is if they are seizures than it is probably epilepsy which responds well is easily controlled and your dog will have a normal lifespan. I have had epileptic dogs on Phenobarb for 16-17 yrs w/ no problems. We just need to check liver values every 6-12 mths and protect them w/antioxidants.
