Cat prescribed Piroxicam for bladder problems. What are side effects?

My cat was prescribed Piroxicam for bladder problems.

The vet has found no sign of cancer but blood markers indicate there is a possibility she will develop cancer.

What are the side affects of this medication?  I’ve noticed excessive drinking and a loss of appetite.  Is this normal?

  1. Dr. Phil McHugh says:

Stop the medicine and see your vet ASAP

Piroxicam is a very powerful medication that can cause kidney failure and other problems. It is not an approved medication for cats, and should only be used in special circumstances such as a confirmed diagnosis of transitional cell carcinoma (bladder cancer) in a well-hydrated animal with normal kidney function.

Cats can have bladder issues alot if there litter box is full and they dont get much water and when you do give them water they drink alot but the thing to keep in mind is to keep your cat hidrated. Give it plenty of water. Im not sure that the fact that your cat eating alot is nessesarly a bad thing. It might just be the medicine is wearing down on your cat quite a bit. I had the same problem with my cat and i looked into having her take pills but its just way to risky. Cats are only meant to live to like 3-4 in the wild so its pretty amazing to see cats make it to 15-20 years old. So id guess your cat will have maby a year to live as an avrage depending what its conditions are. You will run into many problems to like kidney failure and bladder may result in becoming worse (99% that doent happen) I just advise not to take it for people who are thinking about it.
