Cat with swollen paw concerns me. Ideas?

My cat’s paw suddenly swelled up and she cannot walk on it.  There is no blood.  She is not licking it but she cries if we come near her or try to touch her paw.  We need to have a vet see her asap and will bring her in tomorrow.

Can I do anything in the interim?

Hi. The first thing you should do is see if you can determine why the paw is swollen.

    Possible causes of swelling, include:

*Bee stings and insect bites. Cats often swat at insects and get stung or bitten as a result. These bites generally swell quickly and may become infected. Sometimes the stinger remains in the paw so its a good rule to inspect the paw to see if anything is visible. It’s important to note that bites from spiders, scorpions and snakes can be dangerous and even life threatening so if you suspect this possibility, get your cat seen by a vet right away.

*Punctures from a sharp object or bite from another cat. During your visual inspection of the paw, look for something that got lodged in the paw that can be removed and remove it carefully. If it’s a puncture wound, clean the wound and put someone on it to stop infection. I’ve used a little Neosporin on such wounds with good effect. Check with your vet on his/her feelings about using Neosporin on cats. Some vets say its fine and others recommend alternatives.

*A sprain, fracture or dislocation from jumping, playing or running. If your cat goes outside he/she could have been injured by a vehicle or other animal.

*An infected nail can also cause a swollen paw. Nails can break, snag, be trimmed too close and become infected. If your cat’s paw seems hot it could be from an infection or an abscess and your cat needs to be seen right away.
