Pomeranian with hair loss. I need advice…..

Monday, February 8th, 2010

I am just about to get a Pomeranian and when I was researching the breed, I came across hair loss and or black skin disease as something that can happen to them.

The dog I am considering comes from a recommended breeder who has pedigree info on both parents and is AKC registered. There is no history of the parents with hair loss or the disease. She has told me that she would not breed a dog that has a potential problem and I trust her.

I am considering getting a male that will be cream and light orange.

My questions are how common is this problem and since there is no history of this in the parents is the chance of him getting it less?

Are there any ways to help prevent him from getting this? Anything will help.

Thank you.

Does dog with renal failure need a diet change?

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

We discovered late Friday that our dog has suffered from chronic renal failure (I hope I got that right).

I would like to know what the odds of a comeback are and I’m interested in taking a holistic approach.

My vet said a change in diet wasn’t necessary. I disagree.

How do you determine dog’s dietary needs?

Saturday, January 16th, 2010

I believe every dog has different dietary needs, so how do you determine which is the right food to feed a dog?

I’ve done a bit of trial and error on my own, but thought one of you may have guidelines on the subject. For example I have a book Eat Right Four Your Type – that states different blood type people require different diets.

Thanks, Vikki

Newly here from Russia and have doggy catastrophe. Need advice

Friday, January 15th, 2010

I moved to Moscow from the U.S. last week and unfortunately on the night of arrival (Friday 22nd) my 10 year old dachshund, Riley, got a piece of rawhide stuck in his esophagus which ended up requiring surgery. The surgery took place on Monday. The surgeon pushed the rawhide down to the stomach and then opened the stomach to retrieve the raw hide. Riley was supposed to come home tonight, but his RBC, Hemoglobin, and Hematocrit levels have been dropping for last two days. Today the 29th, they were 3.2, 70, and 23 respectively. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to get a count on reticulocytes before the transfusion, but the vet said that even if he was producing RBC he wasn’t producing at a rate fast enough to catch up. They did ultrasound and xray to make sure there was no internal bleeding. And so, today they kept him to do a transfusion. I have been struggling with language barriers and am frustrated beyond belief…Half the time I am scared I am going to loose the little guy and half the time I am sure that they are just creating these tests and procedures to get more money out of me,

A little background on Riley… 2 years ago he was diagnosed with SARDS and lost 100% of his eye sight. Approximately one year before the SARDS, he had developed a severe gastro intestinal problem. He was loosing weight fast and couldn’t keep food down. We and vet feared he may have cancer. After putting a scope down into his gut, the vet described his stomach/intestines as hamburger meat and the intestine walls were thickened and unable to absorb nutrients. I can’t remember all of the discussions, but the vet said that there was an increased level of some type of bacteria that was causing the problem. It was assumed ( I don’t think we ever got a strong diagnosis) that he had a food allergy and the vet put him on Z/D ultra and 1/4 of a 250g Metronidazole tablet 2 times daily with food. This has managed his symptoms very well. We thought we had lost him and then he was back and doing great as long as we did not change his food and continue the metronidazole. He has had annual liver function tests since he went on the metronidazole 3 years ago. Then as I said one year after the gastro intestinal problems he goes blind, diagnosis SARDS.

Now after this latest catastrophe, I am trying to figure out what could be causing the anemia…if as the doctor thinks it is not due to bleeding.

Could it simply be an iron deficiency due to blood loss during the surgery?

Could it be stress or some other kind of delayed reaction to surgery due to blood loss?

I have heard that SARDS is associated with Cushing’s. Riley may have had some early symptoms. He was loosing hair, and he was always hungry (but since he was a puppy he was always hungry so I don’t count that one). Should we check further for Cushings? If he has Cushings could it have compromised his liver, which might have been helped along further by surgery?

The vet here in Moscow has been using intravenous metronidazole on Riley. Is that dangerous for his liver, since Riley has been on Metronidazole for three years?

Anything else we should consider?

Your help would be most appreciated.

Frontline plus reaction in dog. I need advice.

Monday, October 19th, 2009

I administered Frontline plus to my dog (11 lbs) first treatment, three days ago, he has been to the vet twice with diarrea/vomitting, red spots.

The vomiting has stopped still has diarrhea and now he will not eat and just lays around tail down.

My dog was prescribed Metoclopramide 5mg w tablets twice daily and Amforol #3 1/2 tablet twice a day.

I really don’t know if I should give him more medicine, he has had so much already.

Do you have any other advice for me?

17 day old lab pup has a growth on his head. Help!

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

Hi,

My yellow lab just had a litter of 7 pups. They are 17 days old and 2 days ago one of the male pups developed a large growth on the top left side of his head. It is oval shaped, as big around as a .50 cent piece and it stretches from the base of his eyebrow to back of his head by his ear. It is as if we went to bed one night and it was not there and woke up the next day and it was there.

We have been watching it for 2 days and it has not grown nor has it shrunk. When we push on it, it feels squishy almost as if it filled with some kind of a fluid.

It does not seem to hurt him and he is eating, playing, and moving just like normal.

What is this? Please help!

Thanks!
Georgi

My dog gets swollen a lot on her face. Advice please.

Monday, September 28th, 2009

My dog gets swollen a lot on her face. Just this past week under her mouth around her neck was swollen, and it’s sometimes her check, her eye, or lip. We have taken her to the vet and they say it’s an allergic reaction and that we should give her Bendadryl. Which seems to work, but she swells at least twice a month…sometimes more, could this be something else? We have sprayed the house for insects and out, so if she is allergic to something I don’t know what it is?

Let me know what you think.

Thanks!

Renee
