Collie with dry, itchy skin

I have a 12 year old Collie with very dry skin itchy.  She’s always scratching and biting her lower back.  Besides wearing away her fur and driving me crazy, I’m getting concerned.

My friend suggests adding fish oil to her diet to help.

Does this sound like a good solution?  I’ve tried so many other solutions and nothing is working.

    Adding omega fatty acids to your dog’s diet can be helpful in treating dry skin, and you’ll often find these added in dog foods.

    There’s a good article at Dr. Foster and Smith’s Pet Education – that covers not only how Omega fatty acids can help with dry skin, but some recent research on how it can help a host of other canine problems. Pretty good stuff.

    It’s important to note that dry skin can be caused by other problems including allergies, so if the condition does not improve soon, bring your dog in for a check-up.

    Best wishes,

    Itch is an irritation in the skin that elicits an urge to scratch. Itches are a common problem and can be localized (limited to one area of the body) or generalized (occurring all over the body or in several different areas). In some cases, itching may be worse at night. The medical term for itching is pruritus.;
