Can ferrets catch any diseases from pet rats?

Thursday, June 21st, 2012

I have a pet rat and two ferrets. My rat’s cage is pretty near the ferret cage. We keep her very clean, but I think she has something wrong with her. She has a huge lump on her abdomen. She’s 3 years old, and I lost her sister to a tumor about a year ago so I’m pretty sure this is the same, but at the same time I’m worried she may have some kind of disease that she could pass along to my ferrets. Is that possible?

Do all white pet rats have sight problems?

Wednesday, March 7th, 2012

I know that albino colored rats have problems with sight. Is it because of the red eyes? And do Black eyed white rats have the same problems with their eyes just because their white?

Thanks.

Is there any ways to prevent breathing problem of my rats?

Monday, February 13th, 2012

I know that my little boys down the line will face some sort of respiratory distress. How can I prevent/slow the effects of that? Are there any foods that I should give/not give to increase immune strength in rats? One of my boys is sneezing a lot and I have at my disposal various antibiotics (cefadroxil, etc) don’t ask how… but is it ok if I give my boys a prevention dosage?

Thanks

Could my pet rat have respiratory problems?

Friday, January 20th, 2012

He’s 9 months recent and fairly good sized. He sneezes a heap, though. I use carefresh bedding so I understand its not that, I’m just not positive if I ought to worry. The only different thing that creates me worry is that generally he’s terribly lazy and can just lay in his house. Not sleeping though. But he sneezes SO MUCH! Should I worry concerning him?

Thanks.

Rat health problem

Thursday, December 29th, 2011

My boyfriend has a pet rat named Agatha, and she is less than a year old. However, she has been acting strange and we just noticed it, but have never even seen or heard of these symptoms. I can only describe it.

She walks forward, sucks in her stomach at the waist, to the point where she looks emaciated, and this makes it hard for her to balance as she keeps walking, so her hind legs drag a little. He says it looks as though she’s trying to turn by standing with both legs, limp, in one spot. I think it looks as though she tries to bend herself in half like a hose.

We looked everywhere for symptoms list, and could not identify what was going on. She still eats, is active, playful, but does a look a little tired. The problem just started today.

If anybody knows what’s wrong with Agatha, please help!

Rat health problems

Tuesday, December 20th, 2011

I’m an experienced rodent keeper; I’ve had everything from hamsters to guinea pigs to chinchillas! I’ve never had any problems with them but I’ve been considering getting some pet rats because people say they are more rewarding. But I’ve also heard that pet rats tend to have a load of medical problems – is this true?  & are they really worth the burden?

My pet rat has health problem!

Sunday, December 11th, 2011

I have 2 rats and one is fat and the other is skin and bone. When I feed them, the big rat doesn’t let the little one eat, so I feed her separately, but she eats very little and runs on her wheel all the time! She’s all skin and bones. I don’t know what to do! I came home yesterday to find the skinny one cold and delirious-like. I got hand warmers and food, got her better, but I don’t want that to happen again. Please help!
