Weekly News

Greetings! First I want to apologize to all of you for being absent for the month of January. Staff additions and website improvements have sidetracked me, but I'm now back at my desk. As of this issue, we are changing from a weekly to a 2x a month format to allow me to devote attention to some of the new features you'll be seeing and enjoying shortly on our site.

This week we have some interesting articles for you from superbugs to pet havens in VA, to dog bark translations and more.

Our video this week is Pug vs. Peacock. A fun video with clever editing to create a mini-thriller movie.

2008 is going to be a fantastic year and I thank you for sharing it with with us.

Sincerely,
Adam

Virginia's very proactive stance on pet protection

Pets in Virginia and their owners have two good reasons for feeling safer these days. A new website and a proposed law, one aimed at informing owners of the presence of dangerous dogs in their neighborhood and the other in increasing the penalty for catnapping.

Computer program could translate dog barks into human speech

Hungarian researchers have written a program that explains the meaning of dogs' barks. The software is still a bit buggy, but it's promising enough to suggest that computers could one day translate not only between humans, but between species.

Missing Cat Found in Owner's Suitcase

The last time cat-owner Kelly Levy saw her tiger-striped feline was before she took her husband to the airport. The 24-year-old came back to her house late Friday to find the bottom step, where Gracie Mae would usually be waiting, empty.

Levy tore the house apart looking for the 10-month-old tabby who had been spayed just days before. She and her dad took out bathroom tiles and part of a cabinet to check a crawl space and papered the neighborhood with "lost cat" signs.

Meanwhile Rob Carter landed at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport on Friday after a trip from Chicago when he mistakenly grabbed the wrong suitcase.

PET OWNERS GET HELP FROM OUR PROS

This week's requests for help

We have requests from all over the US. If you can help, please let us know:

  • 12 y/o Cairn Terrier with allergies: I have a cairn terrier - male- about 12 years old. He is frisky and in pretty good overall health except on occasion he gets terrible skin allergies and his whole body feels hot. When this happens I notice that his breath also gets really bad. I changed his food to an all natural vegetarian diet about 9 months ago and everything cleared up. He was happy and his coat looked better than it ever has and his breath was not bad. I thought I had solved the problem but then out of nowhere it happened again. I just wish I knew the source of this problem. Any suggestions? I don't like to give him cortisone shots and prefer natural ways of dealing with problems if possible. I would really like to know how to prevent this in the future. He gets 1/2 can of food in the morning and 1 cup of dry food at night. No table food but he does get a little piece of cheese each morning to take a thyroid pill. AT night he gets a small natural treat at bedtime. He always acts hungry.

    Thank You

  • 8 y/o eight year old beagle with unexplained problems. Help!: Our eight year old beagle mix started drinking excesssive water and urinating inside and outside. A urine sample from our vet showed sugar, cut blood test was negative for diabetes. A songoram showed nothing. She's eating well and is still active. We give her Hill's k/d canned food, but our vet had no other suggestions. Is there nothing else we can do?

    Thank You

  • 8 y/o Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever with thyroid and allergy problems: I have a female Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever. She is about 8 years old. I am told she is typical of the Goldens in that her Thyroid Gland seems to be non exsistent. She has very bad seasonal allergies.

I've had two blood tests done for her. We have her on 4 different pills that are just barely effective.

    Thank You

  • White Corgi whose paws turn pink: I have a 10-year-old Corgi who has been in pretty good health his whole life. But sometimes some of the white fur on his front paws turns a pinkish hue and he begins to lick them quite a bit. Is there anything I can do to remedy this? We live in Wisconsin - might the cold weather have something to do with it?

    Thanks!
