Weekly News

The holiday season is upon us and the weather has turned cool. Now is a good time to review your winter pet safety measures. Pets are affected by damp weather, freezing temperatures and drier air that winter can bring (we just read a report of a big jump in a serious canine bacterial infection as a result of wet weather in Kansas). Hopefully you made it through Halloween with no mishaps, and with good planning the rest of the year can be an enjoyable one for pets and family (just make sure to keep rich foods away from your pets to avoid unnecessary problems).

On the subject of preventing pet problems, we have a story on why vet bills are so high, a border collie with an important job, and Riley the very special amputee horse at Best Friends Sanctuary.

Our video this week is "ARAVA the roller skating tortoise", featuring a disabled tortoise who has a new lease on life with wheels.

Enjoy and have a great week!

Why are vet bills so high?

I came across an excellent article from George Messenger, one of the veterinarians in our directory, that answers the question of why vet bills are so high. It's something I wanted to know after a recent visit to the vet wound up costing 4 times as much as I expected. Ouch!!!!

VIDEO OF THE WEEK

ARAVA the roller skating tortoise

I've recently discovered how cool turtles can be - we have 4 red-eared sliders that recently became part of our office and each one has a distinct personality - and the video of this tortoise at a Jerusalem zoo being helped by people who care is great.

Post this LOW on the fridge and make sure your pets read it:

Dear Dogs and Cats,

The dishes with the paw print are yours and contain your food. The other dishes are mine and contain my food. Please note, placing a paw print in the middle of my plate and food does not stake a claim for it becoming your food and dish, nor do I find that aesthetically pleasing in the slightest.

The stairway was not designed by NASCAR and is not a racetrack. Beating me to the bottom is not the object. Tripping me doesn't help because I fall faster than you can run.

I cannot buy anything bigger than a king sized bed. I am very sorry about this. Do not think I will continue sleeping on the couch to ensure your comfort. Dogs and cats can actually curl up in a ball when they sleep. It is not necessary to sleep perpendicular to each other stretched out to the fullest extent possible. I also know that sticking tails straight out and having tongues hanging out the other end to maximize space is nothing but sarcasm!

For the last time, there is not a secret exit from the bathroom. If by some miracle I beat you there and manage to get the door shut, it is not necessary to claw, whine, meow, try to turn the knob or get your paw under the edge and try to pull the door open. I must exit through the same door I entered. Also, I have been using the bathroom for years -- canine or feline attendance is not required.

The proper order is kiss me, then go smell the other dog or cat's butt rather than the other way around. I cannot stress this enough!
