If you're cooking at home, know what to feed your pets
April 2, 2007 -- From 9WSYR

Syracuse, NY -- Ever since the massive pet food recall by Menu Foods, some pet owners have decided not to take any chances.

They've been cooking for their pets, and feeding them prepared foods made for human consumption.

But if you think pets can thrive on the same diet we do, you're making a huge mistake.

Dr. Elizabeth Dole of Stack Veterinary Hospital in the Town of Onondaga says some human food is dangerous for pets to eat.

Dr. Dole says it is not a good idea to serve your dogs, and especially cats, a home cooked meal.

Cats need certain amino acids for their heart and eyes that human food can not provide. And she says it's extremely hard to create a "balanced" diet for your pet with our food.

But not only is it not balanced, certain foods can harm your pet. Dr. Dole says never give your dog or cat Onions, Grapes, Garlic, Raisins and Chocolate.

She still recommends the dry food, if you need something to entice your pet to eat it, put a scoop of baby food on top if it, but you also don't want to only feed your pet baby food.

According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, These Foods May Not Be Safe for Pets:

  • Alcoholic beverages
  • Chocolate (bakers, semi-sweet, milk chocolate)
  • Coffee (ground, beans, chocolate-covered espresso beans)
  • Moldy or spoiled foods
  • Onions
  • Garlic
  • Salt
  • Yeast dough
  • Macadamia nuts
  • Raisins and grapes
  • Avocado
  • Hops (used in home brewing)
  • Fatty foods
  • Bones
  • Milk
  • Raw eggs
  • Raw or undercooked meat
  • Products containing the sweetener xylitol

(*** VetLocator NOTE ****although these are guidelines from the AVMA, not everyone will agree that all of these foods are harmful to animals. We advise you to please check with your own veterinarian regarding the best diet to fit your pet and your pet's lifestyle and condition)
