April 7, 2008 -- NEPONSET, Illinois -- A Bureau county teenager is recovering along with her cat, after both were diagnosed with MRSA.
It started out as what Cathy Conner thought was a spider bite on her daughters arm.
"She'd been outside playing with a new puppy so didn't really think anything of it when she had a little bump" said Cathy Conner.
But after the wound began to grow and turn into a boil, Cathy decided to take her fifteen year old daughter Kassandra to the doctor.
"I was just horrified. I was scared to death because heard it's out there but now its in my backyard" said Cathy.
Doctors diagnosed Kassandra with MRSA, the superbug known to cause amputation and even death.
"When so young you think stuff can't happen to you but it obviously can" said Kassandra Conner.
However, Kassandra wasn't the only one in the Conner household to find out she has MRSA.
For weeks the Conners calico cat Chloe had a skin issue that left veterinarians confused. Now, with Kassandra having MRSA Cathy decided to have Chloe tested as well.
"They were really puzzled as to what was going on with her" said Cathy Conner.
Turns out the families cat also has MRSA, but who gave it to who remains a mystery.
Although both Kassandra and Chloe are doing better both still have a chance of reoccurance.
