Welcome!

Welcome to the April edition of Vets-N-Pets-N-Stuff!

The past month has been full of news about the massive pet food recall, and each time we check, it seems there is another recall added. This past week two more products were recalled and you can read about them and see the complete list of recalled products below. Many pet owners are confused about what foods to feed their pets and many are preparing pet food in their kitchen. Our articles "What's in a label" and "If you're cooking at home, know what to feed your pets" contains vital information you should know to keep your pets safe.

We have two nice stories about heros, both the pet and the human kind. Our video this week is the extended version of the AMEX commercial with Ellen Degeneres and the animals. Our office loved it and we know you will enjoy it too.

Finally, don't forget to check out our "Ask A Pet Pro" column on the right!

What's in a label?

With the massive pet food recall, many pet owners are nervous about buying pet food these days. So what's a pet shopper to do? There's no quick fix or short answer — but veterinarians and animal experts say reading labels is a good start.

If you're cooking at home, know what to feed your pets

Ever since the massive pet food recall by Menu Foods, some pet owners have decided not to take any chances. They've been cooking for their pets, and feeding them prepared foods made for human consumption.

But if you think pets can thrive on the same diet we do, you're making a huge mistake.

FDA

The up-to-date list of recalled pet food products

Here are two more recalls and the link below is the up-to-date list of all pet foods and recalled pet products from the FDA:

Del Monte Pet Products has become the latest company to voluntarily recall some of its brands of foods. They include Jerky Treats Beef Flavor Dog Snacks and Pounce Meaty Morsels Moist Chicken Flavor Cat Treats.

The company said two other products sold under private labels also are affected: Ol' Roy Beef Flavor Jerky Strips Dog Treats and Ol' Roy Beef Flavor Snack Stick Dog Treats.

Del Monte said it was recalling the food after learning that the wheat gluten supplied to it from a Chinese plant contained melamine.

----- Eight In One, Inc., a division of United Pet Group, Inc., is voluntarily recalling nationally all lots of Dingo Chicken Jerky treats due to Company concerns that the jerky treats have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, which can cause serious infections in dogs and cats, and, if there is cross contamination, in people, especially children, the aged, and people with compromised immune systems. The Food and Drug Administration is aware of this recall.

Ask A Pet Pro

Here is a recent question from our blog 'Ask A Pet Pro" which contains questions pet owners have asked with responses from some of our pet pros:

Question:
I have 2 dogs and need information on an alternative to regular vaccines. They had their shots last July for rabies parvo and distemper, and one of them had a seizure 3 days later.

What do they actually need for this year? I heard it is not necessary to do all this yearly, except by law they are required to get rabies shots which is only needed every 3 years. Can you clear this up????

Pet Pro Answers

"The problem may be more than diarrhea. Diarrhea is just a sign. Your cat may have a treatable inflammatory or cancerous condition. Please see a vet to get a correct diagnosis. Good luck."
